A man involved in an attack with a hammer in Keizer was sentenced to 4 ½ years prison Wednesday, officials said. Jose Emanuel Patricio, 20, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful use of a weapon in the incident. Police said he and two other men, Fermin Flores-Bautista, 21, and Hector Flores, 18, went to an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Partridge Lane NE in Keizer just before 9 p.m. One of the suspects is accused of hitting another man in the chin with a hammer while Patricio carried a shotgun. Several shots were fired into the apartment complex. The suspects fled but were found later in a van near the complex. The gun was also found, according to police. Flores-Bautista, who is charged with second and third-degree assault, is next scheduled to appear in court Feb. 7. The third man wasn’t charged as an adult, according to online court records.

A man fleeing from police took shelter in a culvert system under the southeast part of Salem this afternoon. An officer saw the man — a suspect in a theft case — near McGilchrist and 16th streets SE about 12:30 p.m. Officials said the suspect then jumped into Pringle Creek and began swimming, toward an underground culvert. The suspect kept moving through the tunnel, and police were able to keep track of him as he moved past manholes on Oxford Street SE. Salem Public Works brought a camera to send underground to find the suspect. Police called off the search out of concern for the man’s safety. “We were concerned if we continued to chase him he’d just get himself into more trouble,” spokesman Lt. Dave Okada said.
